LONAVALA, KHANDALA & KARLA

The twin hill resorts of Khandala and Lonavala have a special attraction for the Mumbai crowd seeking a convenient weekend holiday in the hills.
A mere 3 hours by road from Mumbai, beautifully landscaped Lonavala and Khandala are famous for their seemingly innumerable varieties of chikki.  But they also offer many sites worth visiting.  Trekking is a good way to get around, but having a vehicle (even a bicycle) is still better, as some points of interest are quite some distance from the main towns.

Other attractions: Bhushi Dam, Valvan Dam, Kaivalyadhama Yoga Hospital, Duke’s Nose, Ryewood Park, Tiger’s Leap.

Monsoon gives birth to
thousands of waterfalls
in Sahyadri, the life revives
with lush green grass and gloomy blue sky logged with water. The cool breeze is calling you to celebrate Monsoon.

  • Tourist Attractions In Lonavala & Khandala. Karla Caves

Lonavala was the site of Buddhist occupancy for quite some time. As such, you will find here indelible marks left behind by monks. One of the most visited of caves is the Karla Caves, which is particularly noted for its rock-cut architecture and the two rows of decorated pillars present in the main hall. For an adventurous outing, there are several forts that dot the landscape of Lonavala. One of the most popular ones is the Lohagad Fort, which is so called because it was considered unconquerable.

Nestling in the hills of Lonavala, these rock-cut caves rank amongst the oldest finest examples of Early Buddhist temple art in India.  The Karla Cave, the largest Early Buddhist shrine in India, imitates the look of more familiar wooden architecture.  Completed in 80 BC, the impressive structure includes a representation of the Buddha, and an aisle made up of 37 pillars and carved elephant heads, which once had real ivory tusks.  The Bhaja Cave complex comprises 18 caves and 14 stupas.  Dating from around 200 BC, these architectural curiosities lie amidst thick greenery in a setting that’s so calm, it’s almost mystical.  Just outside Karla Caves.  Ekvira Temple is visited by thousands of devotees, mainly fisher folk.

There could be innumerous caves, forts, lakes, waterfalls and natural beauty in your kitty once you are in Lonavala and Khandala. Rajmachi fort is of huge attractions which can only be reached on foot. The fort creates a panoramic view with deep valleys on three sides and dense forest on the other. The other nearby forts that could also be visited is Manoranjan Fort, Shrivardhan Fort, Visapur Fort, Lohagad Fort, and the Tunga Fort.
Besides the very famous Karla Caves the other two caves that demand a visit are Bhaja Caves and the Bedsa Caves. Like the Karla caves, Bhaja Caves are also Buddhist caverns. With huge pillars, lions, human figures and a large hall, the Bedsa Caves are situated close to the Mumbai-Pune highway.

Khandala and Lonavala also offer some wondrous scenic beauty. With meandering waterfalls and placid lakes, Lonavala and Khandala will always help you connect yourself with the nature. The main lakes are Pavna, Lonavala, Tungarli and Valvan lakes. But the most enigmatic view of the Kune falls, where silvery water gushes down to a pool 100 m below is bound to steal your heart away. This lovely cascade of water can be seen from Khandala Ghat. Tigers leap gives a fascinating view of the entire valley. It looks like a tiger leaping from a distance and thus got its name.

  • Location

Set in the lush green hills of the Sahyadris, Lonavala is at an altitude of 625 m and is the most popular weekend destination from Mumbai and Pune. Known as the Jewel of the Sahyadri it offers the tourist pristine woods and valleys, gushing waterfalls, historic caves, and scenic vistas. The surroundings hills were the stronghold of the Maratha rulers, who practised guerrilla warfare from here, against the Moghuls and later the British. Lonavala now houses holiday homes of celebrities and industrialists, as well as a plethora of holiday resorts. Its other famous cousin town, Khandala lies just 5 Km away.

  • Activities & Things To Do

Buying chikki is definitely a must here. MTDC karla has a private lake and boating centre. Go and have a boat ride. Also, near the boat ride, there is a small tent which sells good ornaments / apparels. Definitely worth the price as we bought many things from him.

    Duke’s Nose

This cliff resembles the nose of the Duke of Wellington, which explains its intriguing name.  It is a popular viewpoint as it offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, valleys and forests.
    Korigad Fort
The hill fort of Korigad in Amby Valley is located roughly 3050 ft. above sea level.  To get there, you travel from Lonavla to the village of Shahpur using any available means of transport, and thence proceed by foot to the fort through rugged hills and forests.
    Tiger’s Leap
When viewing the valley from a certain point at this location, one has the illusion of a tiger leaping across the valley, hence the name.  The echoes caused by dropping rocks into the crevasse is another attraction.
    Lohgad
Lohgad attracts visitors with its wide, refreshing waterfalls, an ancient fort, and, of course, those famous caves – atop a steep flight of steps.
